Feel free to share any and all deals and steals you snagged throughout the week. All that I ask is that you link directly to your deal posts and not to the main page of your blog. If you don't have a blog, feel free to leave your deals in the comments section.

CVS Weekly Trip: 89% Savings

I went to CVS this week to do the Glade and Ragu/Skippy deal. Here is the breakdown of what I got:

Transaction #1
2 Gallons of milk @ 2.49/ea. - 4.98
6 Ragu @ 3/$5.00 - 10.00
2 Glade Sense & Spray @ 6.00/ea. - 12.00
1 Scope Outlast - 3.49
2 Halloween Play-doh @ .69/ea. - 1.38 (90% clearance)
Total 31.85

$5.00/$30.00 CVS coupon
(2) $1.25/3 Ragu
(2) $4.00/1 Glade Sense and Spray
$1.00/1 Scope Outlast
$15.00 Extrabucks

Total after coupons - .35
OOP - .35 + tax 1.42 = 1.77

ECB earned - 9.00 (2.00 Scope, 3.00 Ragu, 4.00 Glade)

(ECB used 15.00 + OOP 1.77) 16.77 - ECB earned 9.00 = a total cost of $7.77.

After sales, coupons, and ECB that is a savings of 89%! But, the best deal by far was the mini play-doh sets for $.69 each.

Kohl's Cares for Kids

I'm not sure if I have ever mentioned this, but I am a HUGE fan of books and reading. I am always looking to expand our children's library and almost always take advantage of the scholastic book orders (and fair) that Drew and Ali's school offers.

While at Kohl's last Saturday (picking up basketball shoes for Drew and my hubby, they got matching pairs and both look very cute!), I saw that they had the "If You Give...." book series by Laura Numeroff (one of my favorite authors) as part of their Kohl's Cares for Kids program.

If you are not familiar with this, Kohl's offers children's books and accompanying merchandise at an extremely reasonable price ($5.00) with all net profits going to support children's health and education initiatives nationwide.

I of course snagged up all 4 books and let the kids each pick a stuffed animal of their choice (they both chose the pig). These would make great gifts for the little ones on your list or also for any Angel Tree/Toys for Tots donation you plan to make. For $10 you can buy a book and a stuffed animal to go along with it and all net proceeds will go to charity. It's like giving two gifts in one!

A time for giving

With the Holiday's fast approaching, I wanted to be sure that my kids understood the meaning behind each of them and why it is so important to be thankful for what you have and also conscientious of others and what they may not have. I thought the best way was to lead by example, so here are few ways we were giving back this week.

Drew and Ali's preschool was doing a lesson last week on sharing and giving thanks. Each class at the school has a donation box in their classroom. The kids are encouraged to bring in non-perishable items that will then be distributed throughout the community in "sharing baskets." Families in need can request a basket through our local Community Needs Agency.

Drew and Ali were very excited to pick through our stockpile and each choose a few items to donate. Ali chose some canned soups and cereal, while Drew chose some pouches of tuna.

I wanted to take this lesson one step further, so we gathered up even more items from our stockpile and mailed them out to Amy who is organizing Operation Santa Claus for our troops overseas.

We also finished up our shoe boxes for Operation Christmas Child. November 16-23, 2009 is National Collection Week. If this is something that you may want to do, it is not too late to put one together. For more information, you can visit Samaritan's Purse.

I have been collecting items all year with Operation Christmas Child in mind. Aside from a trip to Dollar General with Drew and Ali to pick out a few items of their choosing to place in the box, everything that I included were items that I had gotten free or next to free with coupons.

School supplies, Buddies soap, toothbrushes, toothpaste, and small toys (McDonald's Happy Meal toys are perfect for this) are things that you can get rather cheap or free. The kids also wanted to include their favorite candy (it must be hard candy, no chocolate!). For Ali, it was Double Bubble gum and for Drew, it was Ring Pops.

Although I try to teach my children about giving all year round, around the Holiday's, there are numerous opportunities to give back. It is so nice to see all my teachings start to pay off:

I took Drew to rent a game at our local video store. Since Grandma had generously given him some of her spare change over the weekend, I asked him to pay for it. While checking out, he noticed the Salvation Army Red Kettle. He asked what is was and I explained. As we were walking out the door, he reached into his bag of change, and dropped a few coins into the kettle. My heart melted! He really does understand!
